Alison Woodward

Emeritus Professor

Political sociologist Alison E. Woodward (Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley) is an Emeritus Professor & Senior Associate Fellow at the Brussels School of Governance. She joined in 2003 and is also affiliated with the Department of Politics at the Free University of Brussels (VUB). She co-founded RHEA, the Center for Gender Studies and Diversity Research at the VUB. 

Her research interests are in the field of comparative European Union equality policy and organization, especially in the areas of civil society transnational mobilization, gender, migration, and equality.  She has been affiliated with the Universities of Uppsala, Antwerp and Brussels, Ruhr University, Wayne State University, Rutgers University, the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin, and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Working as a policy consultant she has assisted the European Commission, European Institute for Gender Equality, the Council of Europe, the United Nations and the Flemish government, and is frequently relied upon for expert contributions relating to social exclusion, gender and politics. She contributes to European science policy as  member or chair of evaluation panels for national and international research councils including in 2022-23 Nordforsk, the Belgian FNRS , Fulbright and the Portuguese Foundaton for Science and Technology. She follows the politics of the United States avidly and appears in Belgian media.
