Thomas Renard

Adjunct Professor

Thomas Renard is an Adjunct Professor at the Brussels School of Governance. He teaches on Terrorism and Counter-terrorism at the MA level, and Emerging Powers and Global Order at the BA level. Thomas Renard holds a PhD in political science from the University of Ghent, and a MA from the George Washington University. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Egmont Institute and Associate Researcher at the UNESCO-PREV Chair and at Ghent University.

Dr Renard specialises on terrorism and counter-terrorism in liberal democracies, focusing notably on the evolution of counter-terrorism policies. His book on "20 years of counter-terrorism in liberal democracies" (Routledge) will be published in late 2021. He has done research notably on (returning) foreign fighters, radicalisation in prison and terrorism recidivism. His research has been translated in several languages, and he has been invited to speak in many institutions, including the UN Security Council, the Global Counterterrorism Forum, and the European Parliament.
