Sam Van Damme

Visiting Researcher

Sam is a visiting researcher in the Centre for Digitalisation, Democracy and Innovation and a researcher at VIVES University of Applied Sciences. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Van Damme lectured on a variety of topics in the Social Sciences (Research Design, Theories and Methods of Political Science, US Foreign Policy, US Politics and Society, Theories of International Relations, Sociology of Chinese Culture, Human Communication and Public Speaking) for BA, MA, and Ph.D. students in Asia (including 6 years at the University of Colorado Denver, Beijing Campus, China). He earned his Ph.D. in Development Studies from University College Dublin. Public Diplomacy and the Media, International Mobility, EU-China Relations, Othering and Orientalism, Crisis Responses, and Community Safety are some of his research interests. He enjoys merging ideas from political science and sociology to tackle a variety of social scientific challenges, such as political culture and transparency, misperception and conflict, identity politics, cultural capital, and age gaps. Sam speaks six languages and lived in China for the past ten years, witnessing its rapid transformation.
