Decades of dedication: Marleen Van Impe celebrates 40 years at VUB

Marleen Van Impe

In 1983, Marleen Van Impe embarked on her journey at VUB Faculty of Engineering, contributing her skills to the Secretariat of the Solar Energy team. Two years later, in 1985, she transitioned to the Faculty of Law, collaborating with Professor Baeteman in the department of civil rights.

Marleen's career took a pivotal turn when she assumed responsibilities for the Programme on International Legal Cooperation - PILC (now LLM) after the retirement of the incumbent. Her commitment endured through the evolution of the programme, also when it became part of the Institute for European Studies (IES) at the VUB in 2002.

Over the years, Marleen played a crucial role in programme management, overseeing applications, student communication, timetables, exams, and the overall logistics of the LLM programme. In February 2021, when the formal alliance between IES and Vesalius College (VeCo), the Brussels School of Governance (BSoG) was born, Marleen continued to provide essential administrative support.

In 2021, Marleen embraced a part-time role and shifted her focus to admissions, managing incoming applications for the IES programmes. When asked about her feelings regarding her upcoming retirement in May 2024, Marleen expressed a mix of emotions:

It's a strange feeling. I enjoyed working with students and professors, especially the interaction with international students. Meeting young people from different countries, with diverse characters and cultures, was enormously fulfilling. However, now it's time to savour moments with family and grandchildren. I plan to continue cycling, tending to the garden, and exploring new horizons through travel.
