BSoG EuroMaster students see new Digitalisation specialisation launched during high-level event at Microsoft Innovation Centre

On 30 November 2023, the BSoG organised an afternoon of discussions on the topic of Digital Sovereignty debates in Europe, based on the research findings of a group of BSoG and UNU-CRIS researchers, who have been working under the auspices of the VUB Foundation's Chair in Digital Sovereignty, funded in part by the European Commission (Erasmus/Jean Monnet scheme) and Microsoft. The event was held at the Microsoft Innovation Centre in Brussels.

Topics tackled included critical infrastructure and state policies, the relationship between digital and green transitions, and the identification of (new) actors and their roles in the Internet governance ecosystem. Distinguished panelists from industry and the technical community also contributed to the discussions, moderated by Magnus Franklin from Teneo. Among the issues discussed were the need for skills and awareness of digital strategies in EU policymaking, the unintended consequences of digital sovereignty posturing, as well as the challenges for the future of digital cooperation.

Last but not least, the event also marked the inaugural lecture of the Digitalisation specialisation of the BSoG's Advanced Master in European Integration, a specialisation that will be taught for the first time in the second semester of the 2023-24 academic year. Martin Orešić, a student in the programme, commented: 'Professors Shahin and Meyer elucidated their vision on and the purpose behind the new specialisation, providing us, as students, with a preview of what lies ahead in the next semester. The lecturers delved into the significance of studying and researching digital policy, shedding light on the true meaning of the term "digital sovereignty." They also stressed the importance of grasping algorithms and digital technology to effectively engage in their study. One of the primary factors influencing my choice of the EuroMaster programme was the Digitalisation specialisation. After hearing the lecturers elaborate on the content of their courses and the underlying rationale, I am even more confident that I made the right decision in selecting this course for myself!'
