BSoG Bachelor students visit International Criminal Court and International Court of Justice in The Hague

On 11 March 2024, a cohort of approximately 20 Bachelor students enrolled in our BA in International and European Law and BA in International Affairs programmes seized a unique opportunity to explore the inner workings of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Organised by Professor Antoine Duval, this insightful visit offered a firsthand glimpse into the realm of global justice. Elizabeth Raczka, Federica Faganello and Ece Celebi, three participating students, reflected on the experience:

My time at the ICC and ICJ was incredibly fascinating and inspiring. Stepping inside both courts and witnessing where groundbreaking judgments were made was truly astonishing. The opportunity to hear from speakers like Judge Hilary Charlesworth was truly enlightening and added immense value to this educational experience.

Our trip to The Hague to visit the ICC and the ICJ was a very interesting and exceptionally eye-opening experience. At the ICC we received an extensive lecture on the Court that gave us a profound understanding of its functioning and wider purpose. The second part of our trip, visiting the ICJ, was truly remarkable as Judge Charlesworth’s lecture and account of her experience as a judge at the Court were extremely interesting and inspirational. She and her legal clerk, who spoke to us directly in the court room of the ICJ, were open to all of our questions and offered us immensely valuable insights in an engaging dialogue. It was an incredible feeling to sit and stand in the places where so many key judgments we study in different law classes have been made. Overall, both parts of the trip were an amazing opportunity to deepen my understanding and practical grasp on the Courts, and I am convinced that this insightful and impressive experience will influence my future path and ambitions.

As LLM students in International and European Law at Vrije Universiteit Brussel & Brussels School of Governance, our recent trip to Luxembourg was an unforgettable educational experience. Our journey began with a visit to the prestigious Court of Justice of the European Union, where we had the privilege of attending the hearing of a case concerning environmental law. Witnessing the legal proceedings firsthand provided us with invaluable insights into the practical application of the legal frameworks we study in our programme. Another aspect that truly caught our attention was the incredible work of the real-time interpreters at the CJEU.

After the session at the Court, we took the opportunity to explore some of Luxembourg's renowned landmarks. Among these were the Old Quarters of the City of Luxembourg. As we strolled along its majestic span, we couldn't help but admire the beauty of our surroundings.

Despite being a one-day trip, our time in Luxembourg left a lasting impression on us. Not only did we enhance our understanding of European law through our visit to the Court of Justice of the EU, but we also had the chance to immerse ourselves in Luxembourg's culture and beauty. It was a perfect blend of academic enrichment and leisure.

I extend my gratitude to everyone who made our trip to Luxembourg happen!
