Podcast #2: Adapt or bust? Managing the impacts of climate change

Traditionally, the climate debate has been dominated by climate mitigation – efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, as the impacts of climate change are becoming more visible across the globe, climate adaptation – measures to adapt to climate impacts – is getting increasing attention.

Lisanne Groen (assistant professor at the Open Universiteit) joins us in this episode to talk about her research on climate adaptation. What is climate adaptation? What are some of the barriers to it?

About the guest

Dr. Lisanne Groen is an assistant professor in international environmental governance at the Open University of the Netherlands (OU). Before becoming an assistant professor, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the OU conducting research for the ‘Adapt Lock-in’ project on (Dutch) climate change adaptation policy. She completed her PhD in political science – on the European Union’s performance over time in the international negotiations on climate change and biodiversity – at the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, in 2016. After her PhD she pursued her first (2-year) postdoc at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) in Tokyo, Japan (2016-18), on low-carbon technology transfer from developed to developing countries.

If you would like to learn more about Lisanne’s work, you can go read the article ‘Re-examining policy stability in climate adaptation through a lock-in perspective’ by Lisanne Groen, Meghan Alexander, Julie P. King, Nicolas W. Jager and Dave Huitema, published in Journal of European Public Policy.
