Research Day

Registrations for the third edition of the joint MiGloba-CESSMIR-BIRMM Research Day are now open! This year, we focus on the topic ‘Migration and Technology’. Technological advances transform our societies in multiple ways and impact how migration is managed and how individuals, families and communities experience their own mobility and the mobility of others.

Our speakers will relate to a wide range of topics that connect both the way in which migrants use technology and the way in which migration is managed by the use of technology. Among the themes that will be discussed are social media, the use of (big) data, border surveillance, violence and seeking justice. We aim for a day full of inspiring talks and ample possibilities for networking.

In the morning, the following speakers will present their cutting edge research:

  • 'Leveraging the Power of Big Data in Migration Studies' by Prof. dr. Tuba Bircan (VUB)
  • 'Social media and migration: an ethnographic approach' by Prof. dr. Elisabetta Costa (University of Antwerp)
  • 'Moving past technology in the study of contemporary border control’ by Prof. dr. Julien Jeandesboz (Université Libre de Bruxelles)

In the afternoon, participants will have the chance to choose one out of three workshops to delve deeper into the methodological approaches used to conduct research on migration, mobility and technologies.

  • Big data in Migration Studies (title tbc) by Jonas Wood (University of Antwerp) and dr. Dries Lens (University of Antwerp)
  • From offline to online ethnography: how to access migrants’ digital spaces by prof. dr. Elisabetta Costa (University of Antwerp) and  prof. dr. Griet Steel (University of Antwerp)
  • Investigating technology in border and migration enforcementating technology in border and migration enforcement by prof. dr. Julien Jeandesboz (ULB), Soline Ballet (Ghent University) and Imane Bendra (University of Antwerp)
