Join for a policy forum on Afro-Belgian perspective on policymaking in Belgium. What drives Afro-Belgian representation? How are Afro-Voices represented in policymaking? To answer these questions, we will be joined by a young Afro-Belgian politician.
Born in Belgium, Aïssatou Cissé, with Senegalese and Mauritanian roots, has emerged as a notable political figure. She has made history as the first black and youngest district alderwoman (local politician) in Flanders. Aïssatou initiated her political journey at the age of 16 by joining the Socialist Party Sp.a, driven by a strong commitment to social justice.
At 19, she was elected as a council member in Borgerhout, and by the age of 21, she assumed the role of district alderwoman. In this capacity, she holds responsibility for 47,000 residents, overseeing various key domains such as culture, transport, heritage, and animal welfare.
Aïssatou, as the first black politician in Flanders, is dedicated to addressing issues of inequality and discrimination. Her specific focus lies in promoting an inclusive society in the diverse community of Borgerhout. Emphasizing the impact of policymaking by a young Afro-Belgian woman, her efforts resonate strongly in the pursuit of equality within the Belgian political arena. Aïssatou Cissé stands as a noteworthy figure in the ongoing progress towards a more diverse and just society.
