Eco-social crisis and judicial activism: experiences and challenges

Practical information

webinar (Zoom)
This event is free of charge, but registration is mandatory.

Webinar organized by the ERC Curiae Virides Research Project (Brussels School of Governance - Vrije Universiteit Brussel) in cooperation with the Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios sobre Desarrollo - Cider from Universidad de los Andes , Colombia, the Institut Barcelona D'estudis Internacionals IBEI, and ICTA-UAB Spain.

With the globalization of the economy, ecological conflicts with a transboundary and/or transnational character are no longer exceptional. They may result from environmental degradation, natural or human-induced disasters, or competition for natural resources, among other causes. Frequently they involve diverse actors domiciled in multiple countries with diverse legal systems, which adds complexity to the possibility of addressing them in a satisfactory manner for all parties involved. Litigation against states and companies has been an avenue activated by rightsholders, and increasingly by stakeholders, seeking to prevent, mitigate or remediate socio-environmental harms and serious risks.

This webinar will uncover various aspects of litigation, which is  a multidimensional phenomenon that requires an understanding from legal and socio-ecological perspectives. This webinar serves as a prelude to a workshop scheduled for April in Bogota, which will delve deeper into the transformative role of actors in shaping litigation for climate and ecological justice in transnational ecological conflicts.
