2024 EU Elections and the Future of the European Green Deal

The European Parliament stands as the pivotal force in translating the ambitious vision of the European Green Deal (EGD) into reality. Throughout this mandate, MEPs engaged in proposals, debates, and amendments to propel the landmark initiative aimed at tackling climate emergency and fostering a sustainable future. EU institutions signalled their political support to tackle the most pertinent challenges that face our generation.

However, this path is not without its challenges as the full realisation of this initiative’s objectives is questioned and polices obstructed. Amidst concerns of a cost-of-living crisis, competitiveness and divergent visions of Europe’s green future, unity is under strain of the difficulties these goals must overcome.

Amidst these tensions, the European Parliament elections emerge as a watershed moment in predicting Europe’s path. As Europe casts their ballots, citizen’s priorities and vision for the future will be tested. The consequences will translate into a European Parliament that either pursues the vision articulated in 2019, or one that questions its relevance. This roundtable discussion provides a space to exchange views on the most critical juncture in European politics.
