EU Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans: ‘Be good ancestors’

On 30 May 2023, EU Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans gave an interactive lecture on VUB campus, organised by the VUB Brussels School of Governance. The lecture was moderated by our LLM student Sarah Jacobs. Mr Timmermans was welcomed by VUB Vice-Rector Nadine Engels. The introduction to his lecture was provided by BSoG President Karel De Gucht and the concluding remarks by our Dean Luc Soete. The topic of Mr Timmermans’ exposé was 'The external dimension of the “Green Deal”: navigating a changing world'. During his talk, he highlighted the main points and challenges relating to the European Green Deal, emphasising the importance of its implementation for the future of mankind on our planet. He appealed for a consistent and well-targeted science communication from universities to policy makers, allowing the latter to make decisions based on scientific facts. He also called for the younger generation to continue its activism and for all generations to make sure we would be perceived as good ancestors, by doing the right things.

This lecture was part of the SUSTAEN lecture series, a Jean Monnet Module focusing on the European narrative about sustainability and trade, managed by Prof. Sven Van Kerckhoven.
