BRIDGES Hip-Hop Contest: Challenging Narratives on Migration

BRIDGES is a Horizon 2020 project that analyses the processes of migration narratives’ production and impact in a context of increasing polarisation and politicisation around migration issues in Europe.

The Brussels School of Governance (BSoG) and VUB’s Brussels Interdisciplinary Research centre on Migration and Minorities (BIRMM) are partners in the BRIDGES project. Our team is in charge of a work package that analyses how EU-funded information campaigns impact on potential migrants’ decisions, focusing on two African states as case studies (Sudan and the Gambia).

BRIDGES is looking for two hip-hop artists – a singer and a mural painter – to reflect on migration narratives through urban culture

The BRIDGES project, in cooperation with Fundación Contorno Urbano and the non-profit organisation Hip Hop Works, is launching the “BRIDGES Hip-Hop Contest: Challenging Migration Narratives.” This contest aims to reflect on and contribute to the transformation of dominant, exclusive narratives on migration through hip-hop culture.

BRIDGES is looking for two socially committed hip-hop artists – a rap singer and a mural painter – willing to join our efforts to create new, more inclusive narratives on migration and integration issues. Both will develop their artistic work through a participatory process involving the community of the dynamic and diverse neighbourhood of La Florida in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona, Spain).

As a result of this process, a rap song and a large-format mural painting will be produced, together with a videoclip, a documentary and a photographic album about the creation process. The stays in La Florida will take place from September to October 2023 and accommodation and travelling expenses will be covered by the project. Also, each winner will be awarded €2,500 and their artworks will be presented at the BRIDGES Final Conference, to be held in Brussels in early 2024.

The call is open to international artists over 18 years old with previous experience in the creation of artistic proposals linked to social, migration and integration issues. This contest aims to serve as a platform of dialogue between experts, urban artists, and the migrant community as part of BRIDGES co-production efforts

If you are a rap singer or a mural artist interested on migration and integration issues, joins us and apply before May 28!
