Practical information

Tuesday 07 March 2023, 18:00-19:30
Pleinlaan 5, Lisbon-Rome, -1 floor
This event is free of charge, but registration is mandatory.

Since the Korea deal of 2011, the EU has included sustainability chapters in its free trade agreements with third countries. In the last twelve years they have grown in size and political importance. Moreover, they may form the legal basis for bilateral litigation, as the Korea-Trade Union case shows. Frank Hoffmeister will recall the historical development of these chapters and analyse their legal significance. In that way, he will also address criticisms raised against the alleged lacking “teeth” of the chapters and share his view how they fit into the overall sustainability trade policy of the European Union.

Prof. Dr. Frank Hoffmeister is a Director for General Affairs and the Chief Legal Officer at European External Action Service (EEAS) and Professor of International Economic Law in the LLM in International and European Law programme of the Brussels School of Governance. He holds a PhD from the University of Heidelberg and worked as an Academic Assistant at the Humboldt-University in Berlin. Since 2001, he has gained vast practical experience in various sections of the European Commission, serving as Cyprus Desk, Member of the Legal Service and Deputy Head of Cabinet of the EU Trade Commissioner. Prof. Hoffmeister teaches international economic law with a focus on investment and trade law.
